IRIS-T does not replace Patriot: how many more air defense systems will Ukraine receive
According to hvylya.net: The Ukrainian army has received seven IRIS-T SLM air defense systems out of the eighteen planned under an agreement with Germany. Another eleven complexes are in the production process. This was announced by Ukraine's ambassador to Berlin, Oleksiy Makeiev.
The initial order envisaged the supply of 12 systems, but it was later decided to increase their number: first by four, and then by another two. All complexes are produced at German enterprises and consist of medium-range (SLM) and short-range (SLS) launchers.
Despite the fact that IRIS-T systems have already demonstrated their effectiveness in combating cruise missiles and drones, they are less effective against ballistic targets. 'Yes, the guys said that there were cases when IRIS-T managed to shoot down a ballistic missile, but still, these systems have a different purpose,' noted Makeiev.
Ukraine plans to receive further supplies of Patriot systems in cooperation with Germany and other partners. Makeiev emphasized that initially, Kyiv requested the acquisition of two such systems from the USA, but the number of installations prepared for transfer has increased to five after a meeting in the 'Ramstein format.' However, according to him, this is still not enough for Ukraine's needs, which requires at least ten Patriot complexes.
Under an agreement with Germany, Ukraine will receive support in the production and supply of air defense systems, which will contribute to its air defense. This is an important step for ensuring national security and enhancing the country's defense capabilities.
