The Irish government plans to make changes to the asylum and support system for refugees. In particular, a charge for state housing will be introduced for working asylum seekers, and the duration of stay for Ukrainian refugees in these homes will be reduced.
Asylum seekers will pay according to their income, and Ukrainians will have their time in state housing limited. The government is also considering the possibility of abolishing benefits for Irish families who host Ukrainians, and halting the construction of new housing.
The opposition criticizes the government for its response to the migration crisis and considers its decisions to be populist.
