This multi-sport event will serve as a primary qualification pathway for European athletes aiming to compete at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The program will feature 26 sports, 22 of which are on the Olympic program.

Making their debut at the European Games will be coastal rowing, weightlifting, and squash. Notably, squash will also make its first Olympic appearance at the 2028 Summer Games. Several sports are returning to the program after being absent from the 2023 Games in Krakow, including:

• Gymnastics
• Volleyball
• Wrestling

Team Ukraine has a strong history at the European Games, having won a total of 139 medals: 45 gold, 43 silver, and 51 bronze. However, at the recent 2026 Winter Olympics, Ukrainian athletes did not secure any medals, despite achieving eight top-ten finishes across various events.

Specifically, Ukrainian competitors at the 2026 Winter Olympics placed as follows:

• Sixth place in freestyle skiing aerials and in the luge team relay;
• Seventh place in women's doubles luge;
• Eighth place in the biathlon mixed relay;
• Ninth place in the biathlon relay;
• Tenth place in ski big air and freestyle skiing individual events.
