A Canadian Visitor Is Deeply Moved by Life in a Ukrainian Village in the Lviv Region
Christopher’s Impressions of the Village of Bilky
According to Главком: Christopher, a Canadian, traveled with his Ukrainian wife to the village of Bilky in the Lviv region. He shared his experiences with his friend Markiyan, a Lviv-based blogger who lives abroad and runs a YouTube channel. The story was reported by the news outlet Glavkom.
The warmth and hospitality of the locals left a strong impression on Christopher. His hosts prepared five different kinds of homemade salads and offered vodka and cognac. After the fifth toast-to happiness and health-Christopher admitted he began to struggle. He also noted the home featured an old clay stove, which the hostess uses daily for cooking. The cellar was stocked with shelves full of preserved food and supplies, and the vegetables and fruits were all grown in the family’s own garden and orchard.
Ukrainian Traditions and a Sense of Happiness
To plow the fields, locals bring in a neighbor with a horse, and the entire family gathers for the potato harvest. Christopher was also offered fresh milk straight from the cow. Reflecting on his experience, he said:
'These people-I could see they weren’t poor. They were happy. They had something of their own, something close to them, and a very strong family bond around the table. Their children-well, they were already older-of course, they all live together. They seemed content, smiling, no one complained about life, even though there’s a war in Ukraine.'
Christopher also emphasized how deeply he was moved by the way Ukrainians cope with hardship:
'I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. I was amazed at how Ukrainians handle everything, how they manage, how they keep doing what their parents taught them.'
In the context of events in Ukraine, traditional dishes remain central in the village of Bilky, including:
- classic Ukrainian borscht
- varenyky (dumplings)
- salo (cured pork fat)
Christopher’s visit became a powerful testament to the unbreakable spirit of Ukrainians and their ability to preserve family values even in difficult times.
This trip to Bilky highlights how traditional values and cultural practices continue to define Ukrainian life, even amid war. Christopher’s observations about the happiness of the locals, despite the challenges, underscore the resilience and unity of the Ukrainian people. It shows that even in hard times, Ukrainians support one another and maintain the family ties that are central to their identity.
In contrast to Christopher's heartwarming experiences in the village of Bilky, another Ukrainian's perspective sheds light on the challenges faced abroad. A recent revelation highlights the surprising realities of living in Canada’s plywood houses, prompting a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences within the Ukrainian diaspora. This juxtaposition of life in Ukraine and abroad illustrates the resilience and adaptability of Ukrainians, regardless of their location.
