His Life and Service

Ivan Volochiy was born on June 20, 1995, in the village of Berestok, which is now part of the Zalishchyky community in the Chortkiv district of the Ternopil region. He completed his studies and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 2016. In 2018, he participated in the Joint Forces Operation. He later graduated from the European University, earning a master's degree. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion, he was serving on the front line near Marinka in the Donetsk region.

On March 7, 2022, at approximately 07:30, Ivan Volochiy's unit engaged enemy forces near Hrushuvakha. The battle was fought jointly with the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The enemy, using tanks and mortars, was attempting to cross the Dnipro-Donbas canal. The mobile group led by Captain Volochiy successfully thwarted this enemy maneuver. Ivan remained on the forward defense line to direct artillery fire but sustained a fatal wound from the explosion of a tank-fired high-explosive fragmentation shell.

Ivan Volochiy was laid to rest in his home village on March 9, 2022. By Presidential Decree No. 544/2023 dated August 28, 2023, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine and the Order of the Golden Star. He is survived by his parents, brother, goddaughter, and friends, who remember him as a hero who gave his life for his homeland. The Hero of Ukraine award is the nation's highest military honor, recognizing extraordinary acts of bravery.
