Artemis II Crew Begins Journey Home

According to Главком: After completing the first crewed lunar flight in over 50 years, the Artemis II mission has initiated its return to Earth. The final phase commenced with the separation of the Orion capsule from its service module. The capsule is scheduled to splash down in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of San Diego. This mission is a critical test for NASA's plans to return humans to the lunar surface.

The four astronauts aboard the Orion capsule are:

  • Reid Wiseman (USA)
  • Victor Glover (USA)
  • Christina Koch (USA)
  • Jeremy Hansen (Canada)

Victor Glover is the first Black astronaut on a lunar mission, while Christina Koch is the first woman. Jeremy Hansen marks a milestone as the first non-U.S. citizen to participate in a crewed mission to the Moon. The entire Artemis II mission lasted 10 days.

Atmospheric Re-entry and Mission Highlights

During re-entry, the capsule will travel at approximately 40,000 kilometers per hour. At this critical juncture, a sheath of plasma will form around the capsule, temporarily blocking radio communications. The astronauts are expected to complete their journey home during this anticipated six-minute communications blackout.

Artemis II represents a pivotal step in reviving crewed lunar exploration and preparing for future expeditions to the celestial body. Its successful conclusion demonstrates the capability of NASA and its international partners to execute complex space programs. The diverse composition of the crew underscores the growing inclusivity in the space sector, paving the way for new opportunities in scientific research and global collaboration.

As the Artemis II mission wraps up its historic journey, it also marks a significant moment in space exploration history. Notably, during this mission, the crew captured the first deep-space image of Earth in half a century. This landmark achievement highlights the mission's dual role in advancing lunar exploration and enhancing our understanding of our home planet.
