According to ХВИЛЯ: The Environmental Protection Department of the Kyiv City State Administration has issued a warning about fines for setting fire to dry grass and leaves in the capital. The city has recently experienced a surge in such incidents, posing a significant threat to the environment and public health. Experts note that land scorched by these fires can take between five and six years to recover naturally. This crackdown comes as many regions globally face increased wildfire risks during dry seasons.

Legal Penalties and Environmental Damage

In Ukraine, burning plant debris is illegal. Individuals who light fires using grass and leaves face administrative fines ranging from 3,060 to 6,120 hryvnias. If the burning occurs within a protected natural reserve, the penalty for citizens can soar to 12,240 hryvnias, while fines for officials may reach 30,600 hryvnias.

Setting fire to dry vegetation is not only environmentally destructive but also a serious hazard to human health and the urban ecosystem. These blazes can trigger large-scale wildfires and devastate natural areas. The flames destroy the fertile topsoil layer, killing beneficial microorganisms. Animals like hedgehogs, young hares, frogs, reptiles, and birds perish in the fires. The burning process releases toxic substances into the air, including dioxins, benzopyrenes, heavy metals, nitrogen oxides, and other carcinogenic compounds.

Witnesses to such fires are advised to:
