Ancient Vase Seized from Smugglers Finds Museum Home

According to Главком: Kyiv Customs has handed over a Trypillian vase to the National Museum of History of Ukraine. The artifact was intercepted in an international postal shipment bound for Switzerland, lacking the required export permits. Following a court ruling and a review by the Ministry of Culture's Expert-Fund Council, this archaeological treasure from the Chalcolithic (Copper Age) period has been declared state property. The Trypillian culture is a prehistoric civilization known for its distinctive pottery and settlements in what is now Ukraine and neighboring regions.

Experts have dated the vase to the middle of the 5th millennium BCE, based on its morphology and painted designs. While legal proceedings were ongoing, the vase was digitized, preserving a detailed digital copy for future research and educational use.

Additional Cultural Artifacts Recovered

In a separate action, Kyiv Customs transferred 13 other cultural items to museums in Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad regions. These objects, also seized from international mail due to missing documentation, span various historical periods, including:

  • Authentic artifacts from the Pidhirtsi culture (5th–3rd centuries BCE),
  • Items from the Chernyakhiv culture (3rd to early 5th century CE),
  • Artifacts common in the territory of Kyivan Rus' from the 10th to 13th centuries.

The recovered items include icons, body crosses, folding icons, and porcelain.

The return of the Trypillian vase and the other artifacts marks a significant victory for preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage. This underscores the state's ongoing efforts to combat the illegal trafficking of cultural property and ensure its protection. Such actions are vital for safeguarding historical memory, national identity, and supporting cultural education and research within the country.
