Kyiv’s iconic sausage roll hits a record 60 UAH, setting a new price milestone
The Kyiv Sausage Roll: Price Shifts and Cultural Impact
According to Главком: Kyiv’s beloved sausage roll, a longstanding culinary symbol of the capital, has once again seen its price tag rise. It now costs 60 UAH-an increase of 5 UAH from just last week. This latest jump comes as the cost of the snack has more than doubled since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. For 45 years, the price of this humble street food has served as an informal inflation gauge for the country.
A History of Prices for Kyiv’s Signature Sausage Roll
The story of the Kyiv sausage roll’s pricing dates back to 1981, when the stand on Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street first opened, selling the sausage for just 22 kopecks. Over the decades, the price has steadily climbed:
- 2010s – 4.5 UAH
- 2015 – 8 UAH
- Spring 2016 – 10 UAH
- December 2016 – 12 UAH
- Late 2017 – 15 UAH
- 2018 – 17 UAH
- September 2019 – 18 UAH
- September 2020 – 20 UAH
- Spring 2021 – 25 UAH
- January 2022 – 30 UAH
- September 2022 – 35 UAH
- May 2023 – 40 UAH
- May 2024 – 45 UAH
- December 2024 – 50 UAH
- Late 2025 – 55 UAH
- Early Summer 2026 – 60 UAH
Journalist Yehor Shumikhin has pointed out a striking gap between the sausage roll’s price hikes and the growth of average salaries in Kyiv. In January 2022, the average monthly salary in the capital was 21,347 UAH; by April 2026, it had risen to 48,003 UAH.
“I would be thrilled if my salary went up at the same rate as the price of the Kyiv sausage roll,” he remarked.
Shumikhin also suggested that
“the round number was likely chosen for convenience in future calculations, following the announced fare hikes for public transport in the city-so that one sausage roll would equal the cost of two rides on Kyiv’s public transit.”
Beyond its economic symbolism, the Kyiv sausage roll has earned a place in the city’s cultural landscape. It now has its own miniature sculpture, the 45th addition to the ‘Shukai’ project. This means the snack not only continues to delight its fans but also receives recognition in the capital’s cultural scene.
The rising price of the Kyiv sausage roll mirrors broader economic trends in Ukraine, especially the inflation that has become more pronounced since the full-scale war began. Once an affordable staple for decades, this traditional dish now stirs concern among consumers, as its price increases far outpace income growth. Beyond its economic role, the sausage roll remains a vital part of local culture, as shown by the new sculpture that highlights its historical and gastronomic importance to the capital.
As the cost of the Kyiv sausage roll reaches a new high, it mirrors broader economic trends in the city. Notably, public transport fares are also set to increase, impacting daily commuters.
