Tips for Reducing Stress in Household Animals

According to МВС: Specialists from the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ canine unit have issued guidance on how to ease anxiety in pets exposed to the sounds of war, including air raid sirens and blasts. Because animals have far more sensitive hearing than humans, they often experience significant distress during such events. This can trigger a range of fear-based behaviors in both dogs and cats.

Dogs may shake, hide, freeze in place, or attempt to flee. Cats, meanwhile, tend to seek refuge in hard-to-reach spots, lose their appetite, change their routines, and might stop using their litter box. Repeated exposure to loud noises can also lead to sleep disruptions, the development of anxiety disorders, and the emergence of new phobias.

Advice for Pet Owners

To help reduce stress and support a pet during explosions and alarms, the canine experts recommend adopting the following habits:

  • Set up a cozy, safe space where the animal can retreat.
  • Play calming music or soothing sounds to mask loud external noises.
  • Ensure the pet always has access to fresh water and food.
  • Engage the animal in play to distract it from fear.

These recommendations matter not only for the well-being of the animals but also for their owners, as a pet’s stress can affect the entire household’s emotional climate. Supporting animals during difficult times can help lighten the psychological burden people carry in conflict zones and foster a more peaceful home environment.
