Controversy Over Poland’s Presidential Decision

According to Главком: Jacek Czaputowicz, who previously served as Poland’s foreign minister, has sharply criticized President Karol Nawrocki’s decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He described the move as counterproductive and damaging to Poland’s standing on the global stage. According to Czaputowicz, Ukraine emerged victorious from this dispute by keeping its military unit’s name unchanged and securing the return of the awards.

President Nawrocki made the call to strip Zelensky of the prestigious honor on June 19. The decision followed a controversy over the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a group that remains a contentious historical symbol. In response, several Ukrainian officials announced they would return their Polish decorations, with Zelensky stating he had mailed the order back to Poland.

Czaputowicz argued that Nawrocki’s actions were misguided and ineffective.

“President Nawrocki is taking the wrong steps. Above all, it’s simply ineffective. Of course, we must demand respect for the memory of our victims in Volhynia,” said Jacek Czaputowicz.

He noted that ‘nothing indicates Ukraine will change this name,’ suggesting Poland did not win the argument.

The former minister also expressed concern over Poland’s declining international influence.

“I believe this insult to President Zelensky will certainly not help Ukraine fight for Poland’s place at the table. It was a very unfriendly gesture,” Czaputowicz remarked.

He added that ‘we will not be invited to participate in various decisions concerning Ukraine.’

Diplomatic Fallout and International Relations

In his critique, Czaputowicz pointed out that ‘different measures are used in international relations.’ He suggested Poland could have taken more serious diplomatic steps-such as summoning the ambassador or passing a Sejm resolution-rather than revoking an order tied to matters of dignity.

According to Czaputowicz, ‘Ukraine comes out as the winner because it kept the name change. It returned the orders-not just President Zelensky, but also senior administration officials-and put us in a difficult position.’ These remarks highlight the complexity of Polish-Ukrainian relations, where historical memory and contemporary politics often collide.

The episode underscores ongoing tensions between Poland and Ukraine, particularly over sensitive historical issues that continue to strain ties. Nawrocki’s decision and the Ukrainian response show how political actions can have far-reaching effects on a country’s international reputation. This situation emphasizes the need for careful diplomatic dialogue between neighboring nations, as both share common interests while grappling with a difficult historical legacy that demands a delicate approach.

The ongoing diplomatic tensions have led to further complications, as the Polish President has disputed Zelensky's account of the situation. This adds another layer to the controversy surrounding the revocation of the honor, highlighting the intricate dynamics of Polish-Ukrainian relations and the broader implications for regional diplomacy.
