Decision of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada on National Security
According to Главком: The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada on National Security, Defense and Intelligence did not support the dismissal of Vasyl Maliuk from the position of head of the Security Service of Ukraine. This decision marked an important stage in further consideration of the issue, as the submission for Maliuk's dismissal will be put to a vote in the Verkhovna Rada.
Resignation and Further Actions
Vasyl Maliuk resigned on January 5, 2023. At the same time, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, appointed Yevhen Khmara as acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine. On January 9, 2023, the president sent a submission for Maliuk's dismissal to the Verkhovna Rada. It is worth noting that during his tenure, Maliuk emphasized the importance of creating a strong and modern intelligence agency to ensure the security of the state, as well as the necessity of reforms in the defense sector, which are being implemented by the President of Ukraine.
Thus, the further consideration of the issue of Vasyl Maliuk's dismissal leaves open the question of his possible return to the duties of the head of the SBU.
This situation underscores the importance of stability in the leadership of the Security Service of Ukraine amid the ongoing threat from external enemies. The committee's decision reflects the division of opinions regarding the future of the SBU, which is a critically important element of national security. Continuation of the discussion of the issue in the Verkhovna Rada may influence further steps in the reform of the intelligence service and their ability to respond to the challenges of the times.
