Ukraine's War Expenditure Breakdown

According to Главком: Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, has revealed that each day of the full-scale conflict costs the country roughly $450 million. This statement was reported by 'Glavkom' on May 13, 2026. Based on this estimate and the war's duration of 1,540 days, Ukraine's cumulative military spending has now exceeded $690 billion.

In his remarks, Sybiha emphasized that a portion of these costs is covered by Western allies, including:

  • direct financial aid
  • weapons
  • military equipment
  • ammunition

Additionally, data from Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) was cited regarding Russia's military spending in 2025. According to the BND assessment, Russia's military expenditures accounted for roughly half of its state budget and about 10% of its gross domestic product (GDP). The agency also noted that Russia's actual spending is higher than officially reported, as the country conceals costs through items such as Ministry of Defense construction projects, military IT programs, and social payments to service members.

These figures underscore the severe economic toll the prolonged war is taking on Ukraine while also highlighting Russia's enormous military outlays, which consume a significant share of its budget. As the conflict continues, the importance of international support for Ukraine remains critical.

This information not only illustrates the scale of financial costs but also the need to maintain a global coalition backing Ukraine. With hostilities ongoing, external assistance remains a key factor determining Ukraine's ability to resist aggression. At the same time, Russia's high military spending signals its intent to sustain active operations, which could further escalate tensions in the region.

As the financial burden of the ongoing conflict weighs heavily on Ukraine, it is crucial to understand the broader context of military expenditures in the region. Recent analyses indicate that Russia's military budget far surpasses that of Ukraine, revealing the stark financial disparities that continue to shape the dynamics of this war. Understanding these figures not only highlights the challenges Ukraine faces but also underscores the importance of sustained international support.
