Ukrainian Lawmakers Under Criminal Investigation

According to Главком: A YouControl study reveals that 35 members of Ukraine's parliament are subjects of criminal proceedings under seven articles of the country's Criminal Code. Of these, 28 are currently serving deputies, highlighting significant legal issues within the nation's legislative body. The ruling 'Servant of the People' party is the primary focus, accounting for 20 of the individuals implicated, who were either current or former members of the faction at the time of the investigation. This scrutiny comes as Ukraine continues its anti-corruption reforms, a key condition for international support and EU integration.

The charges span various offenses. Thirteen deputies from the ninth convocation were implicated for submitting false information (Article 366-2), with the majority-10 cases-closed due to the statute of limitations. Four individuals are accused or suspected under Article 191 (misappropriation of property), while four 'Servant of the People' MPs face proceedings under Article 368 (abuse of office).

Systemic Issues in Parliament

Another notable area involves Article 369 (abuse of influence), with six deputies accused or suspected. For illicit enrichment (Article 368-5), current MP Andriy Klochko and former MP Iryna Kormyshkina are charged. Overall, 41 current deputies of the ninth convilation have received suspicion notices for corruption-related crimes, underscoring the pervasive nature of the problem. The sheer number of cases points to deep-rooted systemic challenges within the political establishment.

Beyond the ruling party, deputies from other political groups are also implicated. The 'For the Future' party has four MPs in this situation, 'Restoration of Ukraine' has three, 'European Solidarity' has two, 'Trust' has two, 'Fatherland' has two, along with one non-aligned deputy and one from the 'Opposition Platform - For Life'.

These figures indicate systemic failings in Ukraine's parliament and emphasize the need for stricter oversight of lawmakers' compliance with the law. The cases are being heard in the High Anti-Corruption Court and its Appeals Chamber, demonstrating a serious approach to investigating potential crimes among the political elite.

The situation with criminal proceedings against Ukrainian MPs reflects profound problems within the country's political system, particularly concerning corruption and ethics. The intensification of investigations aims not only to hold offenders accountable but also to restore public trust in state institutions.

In the context of Ukraine's European integration, it is crucial that the process of cleaning up parliament is transparent and effective, which could be a vital step toward reforming state institutions and strengthening the rule of law.
