G7 leaders called for peace in Ukraine: what the joint statement entails
The leaders of leading democratic countries published a joint statement supporting peace for Ukraine and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The statement emphasizes that Ukraine must remain strong in any negotiations and highlights unity in the stance against the inadmissibility of changing borders by force. The leaders are united in their desire for a just and lasting peace for the Ukrainian people.
'We are all united in our desire for a just and lasting peace that the people of Ukraine deserve. Russia has repeatedly shown that only Ukraine is genuinely committed to peace, while Putin continues to choose violence and destruction,' the joint statement reads.
The leaders stressed that any ceasefire must occur only under the condition that Ukraine is strengthened economically and militarily. To this end, partners are preparing new sanctions against the Russian defense industry and developing mechanisms to use frozen Russian assets to finance Ukrainian needs. Details will be discussed at a European Council meeting and in the format of a 'coalition of the willing'.
Russia reacted aggressively
In Moscow, the statement was met with aggression. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov believes that an immediate ceasefire would lead to most of Ukraine coming under the control of Nazis. The Russian side considers the West's initiatives to be a 'violation of agreements between Putin and Trump in Alaska'. Thus, while the democratic world seeks ways to real peace, the Kremlin continues to justify its aggression and prepares for further hostilities.
World leaders expressed support for Ukraine and called for peace, emphasizing the importance of military support for Ukraine in case of a ceasefire.
