Lectures on War Dominated Istanbul Talks, Says Kyiv Official
Ukraine-Russia Negotiations in Istanbul
According to Главком: During the Ukraine-Russia talks held in Istanbul, Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky delivered lengthy lectures on Turkish and Swedish wars instead of focusing on the meeting's agenda. This was reported by Sergiy Kyslytsya, First Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. In response, the Ukrainian delegation agreed to avoid historical disputes and steer conversations back to concrete issues on the table.
Kyslytsya noted that "overall, those Istanbul meetings were cluttered with audio spam, with the Russian side spewing a great many narrative-driven lectures." He also emphasized that Medinsky "devoted a lot of time to various historical digressions, which he clearly values, even though we all remember the problems with his dissertations and plagiarism."
Staying on Topic
Before the negotiations began, the Ukrainian team decided not to engage in historical arguments. This choice was a key step toward concentrating on the pressing issues that needed discussion. Among the topics Medinsky brought up were historical conflicts, specifically the Turkish and Swedish wars.
Thus, despite the barrage of lectures and historical debates from the Russian delegation, the Ukrainian side worked to maintain focus on critical aspects of the negotiation process.
Despite communication difficulties between the delegations, Ukraine's strategic goal remained centered on current issues related to security and territorial integrity. Avoiding historical disputes may signal the Ukrainian side's desire for constructive dialogue and progress in the talks. It also underscores the importance of selecting discussion topics that can help resolve modern conflicts.
In light of the ongoing negotiations, it's worth noting that President Zelensky recently held a significant meeting with Nawrocki in Ankara, which lasted over an hour. This discussion may provide further insights into Ukraine's diplomatic strategies and priorities in the face of the complex situation with Russia.
