One-Fifth of Plant Evolutionary History Could Be Lost Forever, Scientists Warn
A Critical Threat to Flowering Plants
According to НВ — Техно: Human activity is putting 21.2% of the evolutionary history of flowering plants at risk, according to a new study by an international team of biologists. The analysis of 335,497 known species identified 9,945 that have been classified as EDGE-meaning they are both evolutionarily unique and on the verge of extinction. This loss could erase a significant portion of the planet's botanical heritage.
Alarming State of Flowering Plants
Experts report that more than two out of every five plant species worldwide are already threatened with extinction. Many species not yet discovered by science are also likely vulnerable. Ricky Gumbs emphasized that
“plants are the foundation of ecosystems, providing people with food and oxygen.”
Applying the EDGE approach to flowering plants will help conservationists more effectively prioritize which species need immediate protection. The EDGE list includes both well-known plants and lesser-known species. Among them:
- Vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifolia)
- The world’s smallest water lily (Nymphaea thermarum)
- The giant flower Amorphophallus titanum
Matilda Brown noted that
“each of these species may hold unique value for science and medicine.”
She added that “if a single branch of the evolutionary tree disappears, humanity could lose potential cures, including new cancer treatments or antibiotics.”
Felix Forest from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, highlighted the importance of these new assessments in identifying species that are often overlooked by conservation programs, even though their loss would be irreversible. The findings underscore the urgent need for action to protect flowering plants, which play a key role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological stability.
