Statement by Lukashenko on May 21

According to ХВИЛЯ: On May 21, Alexander Lukashenko made a public statement in response to recent remarks by Volodymyr Zelensky. He assured that Belarus has no intention of becoming involved in the war against Ukraine. Lukashenko stressed that the only scenario in which Belarus could enter the conflict would be a direct act of aggression against Belarusian territory. In such a case, he said, it would involve joint defense with Russia.

Lukashenko also noted that Minsk sees no civilian or military need to join the war against Ukraine.

“We do not plan to get drawn into the war in Ukraine. There is absolutely no need for it-neither civilian nor military,” he declared.

The Belarusian leader proposed a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky at any location in Ukraine or Belarus, expressing readiness for dialogue:

“If President Zelensky wants to talk about something, seek advice, or anything else, please-we are open to that.”

This statement from Lukashenko came as a response to Zelensky’s warning about possible additional attacks on northern regions of Ukraine from the Belarusian-Bryansk direction. Lukashenko expressed surprise that there are things to discuss with Americans, Germans, Poles, Lithuanians, and Latvians, but not with Ukraine. According to him,

“Belarus will be drawn into the war only in one case-if aggression is carried out against our territory.”

Thus, Lukashenko seeks to emphasize Belarus’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the lack of intention to participate in the war unless there is a threat from external forces.

Lukashenko’s statement reflects the complex geopolitical situation in the region, where Belarus is trying to maintain neutrality despite its close ties with Russia. At the same time, the reaction of the Ukrainian side and the international community to these words could influence the further course of events on the front. Dialogue between Minsk and Kyiv, as Lukashenko noted, could be an important step toward reducing tensions in the region, but whether it will be realized remains an open question.

As tensions continue to rise, the dynamics between Belarus and Ukraine are becoming increasingly complex. Lukashenko's assurance of Belarus's neutrality contrasts sharply with recent warnings from Zelensky regarding potential aggression from Belarusian territory, highlighting the precarious balance in the region's security landscape.
