Despite Parent Committee Objections, Lviv Student on Ventilator Dances at Graduation
Sofia Radysh's Graduation Waltz
According to Главком: In Lviv, Sofia Radysh, a graduate of School No. 13 who uses a ventilator due to a musculoskeletal condition, participated in the official ceremony and danced the graduation waltz. Sofia had been homeschooled under an individualized program, but two months before the end of the school year, she expressed a desire to join the celebration. Initially, members of the parent committee opposed her participation, arguing it might be too difficult to accommodate.
However, one of Sofia's classmates offered to be her dance partner for the waltz. A choreography teacher, the school administration, and the teaching staff all contributed to the preparations, making the idea a reality. The ceremony took place on May 30, and Sofia attended her final lesson, where she received congratulations and performed the waltz. Unfortunately, the venue chosen for the main graduation party was not accessible for her needs.
An Alternative Celebration
To mark the occasion, Sofia's family decided to organize their own celebration at an inclusive restaurant equipped for people with disabilities. Around 50 relatives and friends were invited. The graduate's mother, Natalia Radysh, noted in a post that during discussions about Sofia's participation in the graduation, questions like the following were raised:
“Even more so! How do you imagine she will go to the prom?” - Natalia Radysh
This case highlights the importance of inclusion and understanding the needs of people with disabilities in society. In Kyiv, efforts to develop barrier-free systems and social services for people with disabilities are ongoing, including the implementation of a social procurement mechanism. The support service for inclusive education has become the tenth service under this social procurement framework, reflecting growing attention to this critical issue.
