According to Главком: Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk shared her thoughts after defeating Austria’s Anastasia Potapova in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 event in Madrid. The 26th seed has now won 11 consecutive matches, including her contributions to Ukraine’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifying campaign. This victory marks a career milestone for Kostyuk, as she advances to her first WTA 1000 final, scheduled for May 2 against neutral athlete Mirra Andreeva.
Road to the Final
After receiving a first-round bye, Kostyuk delivered a series of impressive performances, overcoming the following opponents:
- Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the second round
- World No. 5 Jessica Pegula of the United States in the third round
- American Katie McNally in the fourth round
- Czech Linda Noskova in the quarterfinals
Kostyuk remarked: 'Honestly, it feels incredible. I think the second set today was really strange. I hadn’t dropped a set all week, so losing one felt unusual.'
She also emphasized that she 'kept encouraging herself' and believes 'that was the key to success.' Kostyuk added: 'I feel like our match last year was completely different. She played differently, and I think the conditions today slightly favored her.'
The 2026 season has been kind to Kostyuk. In mid-April, she won the WTA 250 tournament in Rouen, securing her second career Tour-level title. Notably, several other Ukrainian players have qualified for the main draw of Roland Garros, scheduled from May 24 to June 7, including Elina Svitolina, Dayana Yastremska, Yuliia Starodubtseva, Oleksandra Oliynykova, Angelina Kalinina, and Daria Snigur.
Kostyuk expressed confidence in her abilities, stating: 'I think I invested the most time in staying calm during crucial moments... I wanted to remember this moment in a way that, 20 years from now, I’ll look back with a smile.' The Ukrainian star is now preparing for the next chapter of her career, aiming for further victories.
