According to Главком: Extended power outages across Ukraine have led to a surge in household boiler failures, primarily due to the halted circulation of the heat-transfer fluid. This issue became particularly acute during winter blackouts, leaving many households struggling to stay warm. Engineer Oleg explains the core reasons behind these breakdowns and offers crucial advice for prevention. This guidance is vital for homeowners in regions experiencing unstable power infrastructure.

The central issue is the shutdown of circulation pumps when the electricity cuts out. As Oleg notes,

"The fluid stops moving. No electricity means no pump operation and no circulation. Without movement, boilers freeze. This is the fundamental cause."

Standard heating systems are not designed to withstand prolonged periods without power, significantly increasing the risk of catastrophic failure.

Expert Recommendations to Avoid Damage

To prevent the destruction of your heating system, the engineer advises the following:

  • Install boilers in dedicated, indoor spaces-never on balconies or in unheated areas.
  • Ensure at least minimal water circulation within the system, or drain it completely.

Oleg emphasizes that

"a boiler must have its own separate room. Keeping a boiler on a balcony is unacceptable."

A boiler's heat exchanger has very thin walls, meaning even a small amount of frozen water can cause it to rupture. This underscores the critical importance of proper system maintenance.

To avoid failures, Oleg further recommends:

"You must, in any case, ensure at least minimal circulation so the water keeps moving. Alternatively, drain the system completely, ideally using a compressor to blow out residual water, as even droplets can accumulate and burst the heat exchanger."

He stresses the necessity of having a functional drain valve, as the thin heat exchanger cannot withstand the expansion of freezing water.

The scale of the boiler failure crisis became starkly evident during the winter blackouts, overwhelming repair services. Former advisor to the Deputy Defense Minister Bohdana Yaremenko contacted over 60 technicians, all of whom were fully booked, highlighting the problem's magnitude. Meanwhile, State Emergency Service (SES) resilience points have been operating at enhanced capacity during prolonged outages. A warming trend with above-freezing temperatures expected from January 26 may reduce the immediate risk of boiler damage. However, adhering to expert recommendations remains essential for ensuring uninterrupted heating operation.

Given Ukraine's ongoing blackout situation, the reliability of home heating systems is more critical than ever. The growing risk of boiler failure during winter power cuts demands that consumers pay greater attention to proper system upkeep. Following specialist advice can significantly lower the likelihood of breakdowns and ensure household comfort, especially under conditions of unstable electricity supply.
