Mexico Declines to Join New Peace Body

According to Главком: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that her country will not become a full member of the Peace Council established by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The primary reason for this decision is the council's lack of Palestinian representation. Mexico, which formally recognizes Palestine as a state, emphasized that the participation of both Israel and Palestine is essential for any credible peace process.

Sheinbaum stated: 'Given that we recognize Palestine as a state, it is important that both states – Israel and Palestine – participate. This is not how it is arranged.'

Despite refusing full membership, Mexico will participate in the council's activities as an observer, with its ambassador to the UN serving as its representative. Other nations have also chosen not to join the initiative, including New Zealand and Slovakia. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced a similar decision.

Origins of the Peace Council

The Peace Council was formally created on January 22, 2026, during a conference in Davos where Donald Trump signed the founding documents. He suggested the council had the potential to become an alternative to the United Nations. Its first meeting is scheduled for February 19 in Washington, D.C., where the primary agenda will be fundraising for Gaza's reconstruction and developing a strategy for governing the territory.

Mexico's refusal to join underscores the persistent diplomatic complexities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This move highlights a broader trend where nations supporting Palestinian statehood are hesitant to engage in initiatives they perceive as excluding a key party. The decision reflects Mexico's consistent foreign policy stance on the necessity of a balanced approach to Middle East peace.
