Metinvest Group's Transformation in Defense Manufacturing

According to Главком: Metinvest Group is fundamentally restructuring its role in Ukraine's defense sector, moving from a primarily aid-based model to a commercial framework for certain products. The company's Chief Operating Officer, Oleksandr Myronenko, explained that while some items are still donated, limited resources necessitate a shift to commercial operations for specific lines. This transformation involves refining products and securing official testing and certification from the Ministry of Defense. This pivot reflects the long-term industrial adaptation required by a protracted conflict.

Key Innovations and Products

The company's key developments include custom-made protective screens for military vehicles, tailored to specific machines and units. They have also engineered specialized anti-fragmentation structures for the radar and control modules of Patriot, Aster, and Hawk air defense systems. A notable innovation is the production of underground shelters made from corrugated steel, nicknamed 'barrels' by troops. These shelters, used for combat positions, command posts, hospitals, and drone operator stations, are constructed from approximately 2mm thick steel and installed 4-5 meters underground with additional overhead protection, enabling them to withstand strikes from guided aerial bombs.

Metinvest is also building mobile hospitals, which are unique in Europe, with configurations developed in close collaboration with military medics. Furthermore, the company has begun developing above-ground 'Citadel' shelters designed for installation in cities, industrial facilities, power plants, and ports. Testing has shown these structures can withstand fragments from 80mm mortar shells and 122mm and 152mm artillery rounds.

Collaboration with the military is organized through direct requests from units, with priority given to those on the front lines, particularly in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia sectors. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Rinat Akhmetov's Metinvest Group has allocated UAH 9.72 billion to support Ukraine, with UAH 5.2 billion directed to military needs under its 'Steel Front' militarization initiative. As one of Ukraine's largest investors, the company commits approximately UAH 12 billion annually to investment projects within the country.

Metinvest's efforts in manufacturing defense structures highlight the critical adaptation of heavy industry to meet the urgent needs of military units in an active warzone. This support, through both innovative engineering solutions and substantial financial contributions, plays a vital role in strengthening Ukraine's security and defensive capabilities. The development of these new technologies and structures has the potential to significantly enhance the effectiveness of military operations and reduce risks to personnel.

As Metinvest navigates its transformation in the defense sector, it's worth noting that the company recently reported a significant financial setback, posting a loss of $191 million. This situation has raised questions about the sustainability of their operations amidst ongoing challenges.
