Ukraine's Defense Ministry Creates Over 2,000 New Tech Roles to Build a Digital Command Structure
Building a Digital Backbone for Ukraine's Armed Forces
According to Главком: Ukraine's Ministry of Defense is establishing a dedicated technology command structure within its Armed Forces. This initiative introduces a new specialist role-the digitalization officer-across combat units, troop formations, and command centers. The goal is to enhance digital services and seamlessly integrate technological solutions into all military operations. This move reflects a broader, NATO-aligned trend of modernizing military forces through dedicated digital expertise.
To staff this new structure, the Ministry has opened more than 2,000 positions, actively seeking qualified specialists. Applications are being accepted on the website digitalteam.mod.gov.ua. Both current service members and civilian IT professionals are eligible to join the team, with civilians able to enter service through mobilization or by signing a contract.
A Diverse Range of Specialized Roles
The military is seeking a wide array of specialists for this new digital vertical. The planned roles include:
- Digital Transformation Lead
- Project Manager
- Data Analyst
- Business Analyst
- Product Support Specialist
- Technical Writer
A unified digital recruitment system is scheduled for launch in October 2026, with specialist assignments being managed through the 'Horizon' unified information-analytical system. The responsibilities for these new roles will involve identifying unit needs, coordinating solution implementation, providing developer feedback, and initiating further technological changes.
As Oksana Ferkhchuk noted:
“In modern organizations, IT is a core part of the team. Now, such roles will systematically appear in the Ukrainian military. This will provide a deep understanding of military needs and allow for the development of digital services not from the 'top down,' but through constant, live communication at all levels.”
The creation of this IT command structure represents a significant step in modernizing Ukraine's military and embedding contemporary technology into defense activities. This strategic initiative by the Ministry of Defense aims to substantially improve management efficiency and operational responsiveness amid current challenges. By integrating skilled IT professionals from both military and civilian backgrounds, Ukraine is building a more adaptive and innovative force capable of meeting the demands of modern warfare.
As Ukraine continues to modernize its military capabilities, the introduction of new tech roles also aligns with recent initiatives aimed at integrating IT specialists into the armed forces. For instance, mobilized IT professionals may soon receive the junior lieutenant rank, opening further opportunities for those in the tech field to contribute significantly to national defense.
