A Ukrainian Marine, Held Captive for Years, Finds Solace in Harry Potter
The Story of Oleksandr Ivanov
According to Главком: For nearly four years, Ukrainian Marine Oleksandr Ivanov has been held as a prisoner of war by Russian forces. A devoted fan of the Harry Potter series, he has been retelling the books to fellow inmates to find comfort during his captivity, which for the last two years has been in a penal colony in Mordovia. In a bid to support her husband, his wife Nelli has reached out to the series' celebrated author, J.K. Rowling.
A Family's Anguish
Oleksandr last saw his family on January 25, 2022. On April 12 of that year, he sent his wife Nelli a final, distressing message in the middle of the night. His eight-year-old son, Demyd, has not seen his father in four years and desperately awaits his return.
“Sasha Ivanov, come home!” the boy calls out to his father, expressing his hope for a reunion.
In her letter to J.K. Rowling, Nelli wrote:
“Dear Joanne, I am writing to you on behalf of my husband, who is in a captivity worse than Azkaban. I think it would be important for Sasha to know that you are aware of him and are waiting for a miracle together with his family. Thank you for the world that teaches us courage and love can overcome darkness.”
She also shared her own feelings, stating: “I probably won't be able to say anything, I will just hug him and cry.”
This story underscores the resilience and love that endure even under the most brutal circumstances. Nelli and their son Demyd hope for Oleksandr's swift return. His situation is a stark example of how the ongoing war devastates ordinary lives, evoking outrage and sympathy. Engaging cultural figures like J.K. Rowling not only provides moral support but can also help raise crucial international awareness for prisoners of war and their families.
