Ukrainian Officer Nadiia Savchenko Promoted to Major Amidst Accusations and Counterclaims
Nadiia Savchenko's Military Promotion and Role
According to Главком: Nadiia Savchenko, a former member of Ukraine's parliament, has been promoted to the rank of Major in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, marking a significant step in her military career. She currently commands a company in the 131st Battalion of the 112th Territorial Defense Brigade. Savchenko and her sister, Vira Savchenko, who serves as a sapper in the 127th Territorial Defense Battalion, were both mobilized for military service in the spring of 2022. Vira Savchenko has been awarded the Military Honor Cross for her service.
Disinformation and Political Tensions
Russian propaganda outlets have circulated false claims regarding Savchenko's death. Specifically, Russian military correspondent Vladimir Romanov alleged that on May 11th, Russian forces struck the headquarters of the 112th Territorial Defense Brigade with an aerial bomb, resulting in Nadiia Savchenko's death. In response to these rumors, Savchenko herself stated:
“Until Victory!”
Member of Parliament Mariana Bezuhla has accused Savchenko of a frontline breach near Ocheretyne and has called on Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) to investigate her military activities. Savchenko, in turn, has formally requested that the SBU and the State Bureau of Investigations examine Bezuhla for potential state treason. Commenting on the reports of her sister's alleged death, Vira Savchenko remarked:
“Even though there is no more room to bury the Russians in Ukrainian soil, they keep trying to bury our Nadiia. Nadiia is and will be! Calm down, you wretches!”
These events highlight the intense public scrutiny surrounding Nadiia Savchenko, a controversial figure due to her dual role as a former politician and a serving officer. The disinformation campaign against her by Russian media underscores her perceived importance on the frontline and reflects the heightened political friction within Ukraine during the ongoing war. The mutual accusations between Savchenko and other political figures like Bezuhla add another layer of strain, illustrating the complex and often fraught relationship between military and political spheres in a nation at war.
