The Hidden Risk of Takeout Coffee

According to НВ — Техно: Researchers at the University of Queensland have found that single-use paper cups used for hot takeout coffee shed millions of microplastic particles when exposed to hot liquid. The team looked at cups lined with polyethylene as well as those coated with biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA). Both types emitted nanoplastics, but the amount varied considerably between the two.

What the Study Revealed

Cups with a PLA coating released roughly 4.3 million nanoparticles per milliliter - a noticeably higher figure than the 2.7 million per milliliter produced by polyethylene-lined cups. The released nanoparticles are about a thousand times thinner than a human hair. The findings also indicate that the biodegradable PLA lining breaks down more aggressively under high temperatures than conventional polyethylene does.

These results add to a growing body of evidence showing that plastic-based food and drink containers can introduce plastic particles into the human body. What makes this study particularly important is that it draws attention to the risks associated with everyday disposable cups and encourages a closer look at safer alternatives.
