NBA Expansion: New Franchises for Seattle and Las Vegas

According to Главком: On March 25, 2026, the NBA Board of Governors approved a major expansion initiative, opening the application process for two new franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas. This marks the league's first expansion since the Charlotte Bobcats joined in 2004. Each new team is projected to be valued between $7 and $10 billion, with their official debut targeted for the 2028/29 season. This move signals a significant strategic growth phase for the league.

League Leadership Backs the Move

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver explained the league's support for the expansion, stating,

"Both markets have a long history of supporting basketball, and the league is ready to take this next step."

This decision is seen as a way to unlock new growth opportunities and engage fresh fan bases.

The return of the SuperSonics will be a landmark moment for Seattle, which has retained the rights to the team's name, logos, and historical records. The original franchise, founded in 1967, won an NBA championship in 1979 and featured legends like Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson affirmed the city's readiness, declaring,

"The community is fully prepared to welcome the legend back home."

While Las Vegas has never hosted its own NBA team, it has successfully integrated franchises from the NFL and NHL and is preparing for the relocation of the Athletics baseball team. The NBA already has established ties to the city through its annual Summer League and the hosting of the In-Season Tournament finals, indicating a strong foundation for a successful franchise.

Both new cities will join the Western Conference, necessitating a realignment to maintain a balanced structure of 16 teams per conference. To achieve this, one current Western Conference team will be moved to the Eastern Conference. The leading candidates for relocation are:

  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Memphis Grizzlies

This expansion into Seattle and Las Vegas represents a new chapter for the NBA, significantly increasing its footprint in key markets and deepening connections with fans. The arrival of new teams is also expected to provide a substantial economic boost to both cities, attracting local and international attention that could spur further infrastructure and business development.
