Purchasing Missing Pension Credits in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian citizens who lack the required insurance record to qualify for a state pension have an option to purchase the missing years. This is achieved by entering into a voluntary agreement with the Ukrainian Pension Fund. This program is open to individuals who are at least 16 years old and are not yet pensioners, allowing them to make voluntary insurance contributions to accumulate the necessary qualifying period. This system is particularly relevant in a country where many workers have gaps in their formal employment history.

A prerequisite for such an agreement is that the individual must already be listed in the Register of Insured Persons. Contributions can continue right up until the point a pension is officially granted, providing a flexible way to prepare for retirement. The insurance record is calculated based on the month preceding the month in which the pension application is submitted.

Correcting a Shortfall in Qualifying Years

Experts confirm that individuals with, for example, 14 years of service who plan to retire at 65 can rectify their situation by purchasing the additional required years. This offers a crucial opportunity for many Ukrainians to secure better financial conditions in their post-working life. For context, a full pension in Ukraine typically requires a longer insurance record, making this a vital option for those falling short.

This initiative by the Ukrainian Pension Fund could significantly improve retirees' standard of living, as an insufficient insurance history is a primary cause of low pension payments. By enabling people to buy missing credits, Ukrainians gain a chance to enhance their financial security in old age. This is especially important given the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation.

The long-term impact of this program on overall pension levels and citizens' financial stability remains to be seen.
