Odesa Region Power Outage: Over 95,000 Left Without Electricity After Nighttime Attack
According to Главком: A nighttime attack on February 10th targeted the energy infrastructure of Ukraine's Odesa region, leaving more than 95,000 residents across 42 settlements without power. The most severe impact was felt in the city of Kiliia, where over 200 homes lost access to gas and centralized heating. Approximately 9,000 people in Kiliia are now without gas and heat, creating a severe hardship amid ongoing low winter temperatures. This attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes on Ukraine's civilian energy grid.
Emergency Response Underway
Forces and resources from Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) have been deployed to manage the aftermath of the strike. The region is establishing 10 aid distribution points, with resilience and heating centers operating in every district. Regional leadership is on-site, actively coordinating actions between rescue services and local authorities. In Kiliia, a meeting has already been held with representatives from the energy company DTEK, rescue services, and local officials to plan the next steps for restoring the damaged infrastructure.
Emergency repair work is ongoing, but the damage to energy facilities is substantial and will require a significant amount of time to fix. Significant destruction was recorded at a DTEK energy facility in the Odesa region due to the shelling. To support critical infrastructure, the following has been deployed:
- seven high-capacity generators;
- eight thermal heaters for rapid warming of buildings;
- five field kitchens to provide for the population.
The situation remains difficult, but rescue services are doing everything possible to restore electricity and ensure tolerable living conditions for residents.
This incident in the Odesa region underscores the severe challenges faced by Ukrainian communities as the war continues to target essential civilian infrastructure. Restoring power and other vital services is a protracted process that directly threatens the well-being of thousands. The efforts of emergency responders and local authorities during this critical period are essential for supporting the population and working toward a return to normalcy.
