Germany's €60 Million Aid Package to Ukraine's Emergency Service: A Look at THW's Support Since 2022
Meeting with the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief
According to ДСНС: The head of Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES), Andrii Danyk, met with a delegation from the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), led by its President, Sabine Lackner. Their discussions centered on the ongoing German support initiated in 2022, the transformation of the SES, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Andrii Danyk noted, 'Our Service entered this major war as a conventional firefighting unit. However, during this time, we have transformed into a modern system capable of effectively responding to challenges of any complexity. This would have been impossible without the robust support of international partners, and first and foremost, Germany. We continue to evolve in line with emerging threats and are ready to openly share our experience with colleagues.'
Since February 2022, Germany has provided the SES with technical support, equipment, vehicles, and construction machinery valued at over €60 million. Key items in this aid package include:
- Firefighting tankers
- Cargo trucks
- Loaders
- Generators
Sabine Lackner emphasized the critical importance of international cooperation in the face of contemporary crises: 'The full-scale aggression against Ukraine has now lasted for over 1,400 days. The situation remains extremely tense. We in Germany understand that we, too, must improve, as the global security landscape is complex. That is why we are sincerely grateful for your willingness to share professional information and your experience in responding to modern challenges.'
The meeting concluded with talks on the next steps in the partnership, which aims to enhance the SES's readiness for emergency response. This sustained cooperation, vital for a nation under constant threat, highlights how international aid is helping Ukraine build resilience beyond the immediate battlefield.
This engagement underscores the significance of international backing for Ukraine amidst a prolonged conflict that has reshaped both the military and humanitarian landscape. The collaboration with Germany, now extending beyond 1,400 days, not only strengthens the SES's technical capabilities but also improves its overall capacity to manage emergencies. Such initiatives represent a crucial component in bolstering regional security and stability for the future.
