Statement by Germany's Foreign Minister

According to Главком: During an interview with Polish television channel TVP at the annual German-Polish Forum in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul declared that German soldiers are prepared to defend NATO territory if attacked. This forum, a key platform for dialogue between Germany and Poland, centered on security along NATO's eastern flank amid Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Wadephul emphasized that Russia poses the greatest threat to NATO, as well as to Europe's freedom and security. He noted that the war in Ukraine has shattered any remaining illusions about the possibility of mutual understanding with Russia.

“This war has destroyed whatever was left of the notion that we could reach an understanding with Russia,” said Johann Wadephul.

He further stated that under current conditions, Europe's security can only be ensured in opposition to Russia: “We must clearly recognize that under the present circumstances-and I see no signs of this changing anytime soon-we can only guarantee security in Europe by acting against Russia.”

Germany's Military Presence in Lithuania

For the first time since World War II, Germany has stationed a permanent military brigade in Lithuania. This involves the Bundeswehr's 45th Armored Brigade, comprising approximately 5,000 troops, deployed near Vilnius. It marks the first permanent foreign military force in Lithuania since the Second World War.

Wadephul assured that “if Russia attacks NATO territory, German soldiers will immediately defend every inch of that land.”

Additionally, the commander of the German Air Force identified targets within Russia that could become NATO objectives in the event of a conflict. Notably, Denmark has also warned of an inevitable new wave of Russian aggression against Europe. As a result, tensions remain high in the region, and NATO countries are bolstering their military presence along the alliance's eastern flank.

The German foreign minister's remarks reflect growing concern among NATO nations about potential threats from Russia. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and Russia's active military operations on the alliance's eastern flank, NATO member states-including Germany-are seeking to strengthen their defensive positions. The deployment of a permanent military brigade in Lithuania represents a significant step in this direction, underscoring the allies' readiness to act collectively in the face of danger. It may also enhance the sense of security in the Baltic states, which feel pressure from Russia.

As tensions escalate, Germany's military readiness has become increasingly evident. The recent deployment of troops in Lithuania forms part of a broader strategy to counter Russian threats.
