Putin to Meet Russian Paralympic Team

According to Главком: Vladimir Putin has announced a meeting with Russian athletes who participated in the Paralympiad-2026, scheduled for March 19, 2026. This announcement follows the Russian team's third-place finish in the overall medal standings at the Games.

German Athletes' Silent Protest

Against this backdrop, German skier Linn Kazmaier and her guide Florian Baumann declined to take a joint selfie with Russian gold medalist Anastasia Bagiyan, who won the sprint event at the Paralympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. During the playing of the Russian national anthem, the German athletes turned away and did not remove their hats. In a group photo, Kazmaier and Baumann also maintained a noticeable distance from Bagiyan and her guide, Sergei Siniakin.

The International Paralympic Committee's decision to allow Russian athletes to compete under their own flag and anthem has been a point of controversy. Florian Baumann commented on the situation:

“It's very difficult for many of them right now, too. But I simply think the International Paralympic Committee's decision that Russia can compete here under its own flag, with its own anthem, while Ukrainians are also present, is just wrong.”

Linn Kazmaier added: “On a human level, I am very happy for these people. They might be very nice people with whom we could even be friends. But it is simply politically unacceptable.”

These incidents highlight the complex political tensions that continue to surround international sport. Putin's planned meeting and the German athletes' protest underscore the ongoing challenges in separating global athletic competition from geopolitical conflicts, raising questions about sport's traditional role as a unifying force.

As the political landscape of international sports becomes increasingly complex, the recent actions of German athletes have drawn significant attention. Their refusal to participate in a joint photo with a Russian competitor at the medal ceremony reflects deep-seated tensions surrounding the participation of Russian athletes.
