Norway's F-16 Delivery to Ukraine Delayed by Year-Long Repairs for Six Jets
Status of Norway's F-16 Fighter Jets
According to Главком: Norway has been unable to deliver promised F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine because the aircraft are not combat-ready. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik confirmed that none of the six jets are currently operational. Two of the planes have been used for training Ukrainian pilots in Denmark, while another two have been undergoing maintenance for over a year with the Belgian company Sabena. Four additional aircraft, which were transported disassembled from Bodo in April 2025, also require repair work at Sabena.
Reports indicate the jets are missing approximately 100 parts, complicating their reassembly. Completing the necessary repairs could take up to a year. It is important to note that 32 Norwegian F-16s in better technical condition were previously sold to Romania. However, official ownership of all six of these specific jets was already transferred to Ukraine between 2024 and 2025.
Impact on Ukraine's Security
As of early 2026, Ukraine has not received any of the 30 F-16s pledged by Belgium. A source within the Ukrainian Air Force emphasized the urgency:
“These six aircraft would have saved lives this winter and better protected our infrastructure. We would have been able to shoot down more Russian missiles and drones.”
Meanwhile, Norwegian MP Peter Frølich expressed strong frustration with the situation:
“This looks like a scandal. I am truly furious. Most people in Norway believed our jets were already in the skies defending Ukraine.”
This delay underscores the broader logistical challenges Ukraine faces in acquiring promised military hardware to counter Russian aggression. The absence of these advanced fighters significantly hampers Ukraine's ability to ensure air defense and protect critical national infrastructure. The evident dissatisfaction from both Ukrainian military officials and Norwegian lawmakers highlights a pressing need for improved coordination in military aid and for ensuring the technical readiness of equipment before transfer.
The ongoing delays in military hardware deliveries, such as Norway's F-16s, highlight the broader challenges faced by Ukraine in securing essential defense resources. This situation is further complicated by France's dwindling MICA missile supplies, which could impact potential deals for Rafale jets.
