Hungary's New PM Magyar Aims to Forge EU Right-Center Alliance, Starting with Visits to Warsaw and Vienna
Hungary's New Prime Minister Outlines His Agenda
According to ХВИЛЯ: Hungary's newly elected Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, intends to bolster Central Europe's influence within the European Union by forming an alliance of right-leaning centrist governments and strengthening ties with Austria. Magyar, who defeated Viktor Orbán in elections this month, has set key objectives: unlocking €18 billion in frozen EU funds, gaining access to €16 billion in European defense loans, and ending the daily €1 million fine for non-compliance with EU migration rules. His first foreign trips as premier are scheduled for early May to Warsaw and Vienna.
Deep-Rooted Economic Ties with Austria
Austria is Hungary's second-largest investor after Germany, with Austrian investments exceeding €11.7 billion. Approximately 134,000 Hungarians work in Austria, highlighting the close economic integration between the two nations. Péter Magyar noted:
“We once shared a country, and Austria is a key economic partner for Hungary.” - Péter Magyar
Magyar, who served as a diplomat in Brussels for nearly a decade during Orbán's tenure, later founded his own conservative force, 'Tisza'. As Stefano Bottoni observed, “he is essentially the first Hungarian prime minister who perfectly understands how the EU's Brussels machinery works.” Meanwhile, Reinhold Lopatka emphasized that “we worked closely with Orbán in the 1990s, and I always say that the young Orbán would likely be one of the biggest critics of the current Orbán.”
This political shift comes at a critical time for EU cohesion. Hungary, alongside the Czech Republic and Slovakia, currently refuses to support a proposed €90 billion EU loan package for Ukraine, a stance that could create regional complications. Key platforms for Central European cooperation include:
- The Visegrád Group (Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia)
- The Slavkov Format (Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia)
Péter Magyar has ambitious plans for his premiership that could significantly reshape Hungary's foreign policy and its role in the EU. His rise to power may mark a new chapter in Hungary's relations with the European Union, as he seeks to invigorate cooperation with other Central European nations. Concurrently, his political decisions regarding support for Ukraine and participation in European initiatives could prove decisive for regional stability amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
As Péter Magyar embarks on his mission to strengthen Hungary's role in the EU, his focus on collaboration with neighboring countries underscores the importance of regional partnerships.
