Hungary's New Prime Minister Issues Ultimatum

According to Главком: Freshly appointed Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has called on President Tamás Sulyok to step down, setting a deadline of May 31 for his resignation. This marks the first major move by the new administration, which formed after the April 12 elections saw Magyar's Tisza Party secure an absolute majority by winning 141 out of 199 seats in the newly elected parliament. The inaugural session of this parliament took place on May 9.

A key reason behind Magyar's demand for Sulyok's removal is the president's perceived failure to advocate for Hungarian interests.

“Sulyok must have the courage to resign,” the new prime minister stated.

He emphasized that the president cannot fulfill his duties while the Hungarian minority in Ukraine faces numerous hardships.

Political Landscape and International Ties

The Tisza Party was not represented in the previous parliament, making its current electoral success particularly significant for Hungarian politics. Magyar is also pushing for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which he plans to hold in the city of Berehove in Transcarpathia. He announced this on his Facebook page following a meeting with Berehove's mayor, Zoltán Babjak. The primary topic of discussion will be the situation of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

Hungary is grappling with serious challenges, including the erosion of democratic institutions, cases of child abuse in state-run facilities, attacks on civil society, pressure on journalists, and a lack of investigations into abuses. These issues are becoming priorities for the new government, which aims to ensure stability and represent the interests of Hungarians both at home and abroad.

The political situation in Hungary and the new premier's demand for the president's resignation may signal the government's intent to more actively protect the rights of the Hungarian minority, particularly in Ukraine. This also underscores the importance of international relations for the new leadership, which seeks to address issues affecting Hungarians overseas. The potential meeting between Magyar and Zelenskyy could be a crucial step in improving bilateral ties and resolving pressing concerns for the Hungarian community in Ukraine.

As the new prime minister takes decisive steps in reshaping Hungary's political landscape, the focus now shifts to the anticipated discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting, proposed to take place in Berehove, aims to address the pressing issues faced by the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
