What Makes Ukraine’s Women’s Wrestling So Strong

According to Главком: Three-time European champion Oksana Livach has identified three key factors driving the strength of Ukraine’s women’s wrestling: the women themselves, their traditions, and their coaches. Livach was named Ukraine’s best female athlete of April 2026 by the National Olympic Committee. That same year, the Ukrainian national team topped the medal standings at the European Championships held in Tirana, Albania.

At those championships, Livach claimed the European title in the 50 kg weight class, while Ukraine collected 11 medals overall, six of which were gold. This marked the first time a Ukrainian team finished first in the medal count at a European wrestling championship-previously, the team had never placed higher than second.

Oksana Livach: 'Our women are naturally strong: hardworking, determined, and resilient. Every one of them is a true professional in her field.'

She also highlighted the role of tradition, specifically the renowned Lviv wrestling school where she herself trained. 'That school produced many outstanding coaches, creating a continuous pipeline for developing Ukrainian champions,' Livach added.

The Growth of Women’s Wrestling in Ukraine

Women’s wrestling in Ukraine first took root at the Lviv school before spreading to Brovary and Kharkiv. Training now takes place at dedicated centers in Koncha-Zaspa and Zarosliak. Narek Budagyan, Livach’s personal coach, was named best coach of April 2026. These achievements reflect Ukraine’s rising prominence in international women’s wrestling.

The strong performance of Ukrainian athletes at the 2026 European Championships underscores major progress in the sport’s development within the country. Local traditions and the expansion of new training facilities are helping cultivate a new generation of wrestlers capable of competing at the highest level. This victory not only strengthens Ukraine’s standing in global sports but also inspires young people to take up wrestling, potentially fueling further growth in the sport nationwide.

As Ukraine's women's wrestling continues to rise on the international stage, the toughest competition often comes from Asian athletes, who have long dominated the sport. This dynamic adds an intriguing layer to the ongoing development of Ukrainian wrestlers like Oksana Livach, highlighting the challenges they face while striving for excellence.
