Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi's Address to Ukrainian Women

According to Главком: On International Women's Day, the Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, paid tribute to the women defending the nation. He highlighted that more than 75,000 women currently serve, with over 55,000 in active military roles. Syrskyi emphasized their critical contribution to the nation's defense against the ongoing Russian invasion, a conflict that has reshaped traditional gender roles in the military.

'Today we mark International Women's Day. First and foremost, I want to congratulate the women who are confronting the Russian aggressor with weapons in their hands. I am grateful to the servicewomen who disprove the notion that Ukraine's defense is solely a man's responsibility,' stated Oleksandr Syrskyi.

He further noted that Ukrainian women have become symbols of dignity, bravery, and patriotism. 'They stand shoulder to shoulder with men in defending the state, saving lives, and providing crucial support,' he added.

The Military Contributions of Women

Since the full-scale war began, five servicewomen have been awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, three of them posthumously. Furthermore, over the twelve years of Russian armed aggression, a total of 1,705 women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine have received state awards. These figures underscore the vital and diverse roles women fulfill in the military, including as:

  • commanders
  • reconnaissance officers
  • medics
  • communications specialists
  • volunteers

Syrskyi's address highlighted not only the role of women in the Armed Forces but also their indispensable contribution to Ukraine's independence and security. This recognition reflects a broader shift towards greater gender equality within military institutions, a modern necessity for national resilience. Acknowledging their achievements and sacrifices strengthens morale and represents a significant step toward equality and justice during this challenging period for Ukraine.
