UN to Deliver Winter Aid to 2.1 Million Ukrainians, Majority Within 50 km of Frontline
Офіс ООН надасть зимову допомогу 2,1 мільйонам українців, переважно тим, хто живе поблизу зони конфлікту.

United Nations Launches Winter Relief Effort for Ukrainians

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The United Nations is preparing to assist 2.1 million people in Ukraine with winter support from October 26, 2026, through March 2027. Approximately 84% of this aid will target those living within 50 kilometers of the active conflict zone. Among the beneficiaries are nearly 430,000 internally displaced persons and 1.7 million individuals who have remained in their homes.

Scope of Assistance

The UN’s aid package includes multiple forms of essential support, such as:

  • heating provision;
  • housing repairs;
  • medical care services;
  • food supplies and cash assistance.

This comprehensive program addresses winter-related costs for vulnerable households, repairs damaged residences, and offers temporary shelter when needed. It also ensures uninterrupted access to heating, electricity, water, and sanitation systems. In addition, recipients will receive both financial aid and medical support to cover their basic needs throughout the harsh winter months.

To implement this initiative, the UN is collaborating with Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, the Ukrainian Red Cross, and two additional local partners. Aid distribution will focus on eight cities north of Kyiv, as well as in Odesa and Dnipro.

"Our plan is to provide assistance to 2.1 million people between October 26, 2026, and March 2027. This includes nearly 430,000 internally displaced individuals and 1.7 million who have stayed in their homes. The support will cover heating, housing repairs, medical services, food, and cash aid. Around 84% of the aid is concentrated within 50 kilometers of the frontline," said Matthias Schmale.

This effort represents a critical component of the UN’s ongoing commitment to support those affected by the conflict in Ukraine. Given the severe conditions of the winter season-especially for those living close to the frontline-this relief is expected to significantly ease the hardships faced by vulnerable populations. The partnership with local agencies highlights a coordinated humanitarian approach aimed at maximizing the impact and reach of assistance.

As the UN ramps up its winter aid efforts, it's important to note that a similar initiative has already proven effective in frontline areas, where over 1,400 families have benefited from substantial financial support. This highlights the urgent need for continued assistance to vulnerable populations in Ukraine.
