Orbán and Fico Launch Joint Proposal

According to Главком: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico have agreed to push for a joint investigative commission to examine the Ukrainian section of the Druzhba oil pipeline. The two leaders discussed the need for both a technical and political review of the pipeline during a recent conversation. To advance this initiative, Orbán has formally requested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy grant the commission members permission to enter Ukraine.

Orbán stressed the critical importance of enabling this inspection to achieve transparency in the current situation. He has also appealed to European Council President António Costa to dispatch a team of experts to Ukraine to assess the state of the Druzhba pipeline. According to Orbán,

“there are no technical obstacles, and the pipeline is closed solely for political reasons.”

Regional Implications of the Proposal

The joint initiative from Orbán and Fico could mark a significant step in investigating the reasons behind the pipeline's shutdown, which is crucial for regional energy security. This move highlights growing concerns among Central European nations regarding energy supplies and their reliance on transit through Ukraine. The Druzhba pipeline is a major conduit for Russian oil to several EU countries, making its operational status a key economic and political issue.

A successful investigation could help clarify the circumstances that led to the closure of the Druzhba pipeline and potentially foster greater energy cooperation between Ukraine and its neighbors. This development could also positively impact the region's economic stability and the security of energy resources for European nations.
