Revocation of the White Eagle Order

According to Главком: Polish President Karol Nawrocki has stripped Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, citing Zelenskyy's decision to name a Ukrainian military unit after figures from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The award has been returned to the Chancellery of the President of Poland. Three former Ukrainian presidents-Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko-have also renounced the honor.

On June 19, Poland's president made the decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasizing that Warsaw could not remain indifferent to the fact that the Ukrainian leader had named a military unit after UPA figures, who are considered criminals in Poland. Rafał Leszkiewicz, spokesperson for the Polish president, confirmed that the award and its certificate would be permanently transferred to the Awards and Appointments Office. He also noted that 'this specific copy will never be awarded to anyone else.'

Renunciation of the Award

On June 20, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that he had mailed the order back to Karol Nawrocki. At the same time, other Ukrainian politicians have also renounced the Polish Order of the White Eagle. Leonid Kuchma, former president Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko all declared they were giving up the award. Poroshenko explained his decision as a protest against the Polish president's move, while reminding that he had previously been stripped of Ukrainian state honors, calling that decision illegal and unconstitutional.

Leszkiewicz further commented that the decision is not aimed at Ukrainians, as 'the real enemy remains Russia.' He added that the crisis was provoked by Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself, who has now become a 'hostage of the political situation.' The spokesperson stressed that Warsaw was open to dialogue, but a phone call between the leaders did not take place due to Kyiv's fault, as Zelenskyy allegedly refused to speak with Nawrocki.

Former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski also weighed in on the situation, noting that a mass exodus of Ukrainians could lead to serious problems in key sectors of the Polish economy. The controversy over the orders has sparked lively online discussions, triggering a wave of memes.

This event highlights the growing tension in relations between Ukraine and Poland, stemming from historical and political issues. The renunciation of the award by Ukrainian politicians may signal deep dissatisfaction with the actions of Polish authorities and reflects the complex context of cooperation between neighboring states. Amid the war in Ukraine, support from international partners remains crucial, and this situation could have long-term consequences for bilateral ties.

The recent revocation of the Order of the White Eagle from President Zelenskyy has sparked significant reactions within Ukraine. In a show of solidarity, three former presidents of Ukraine have also renounced this prestigious honor, highlighting the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Poland. Their decisions underscore the complex political dynamics at play and the implications for Ukraine's relationships with its allies.
