Pavlo Durov stated that the European Union is becoming a banana republic
Павло Дуров висловив думку, що Європейський Союз втрачає свій вплив і стає схожим на тропічну країну.

The European Parliament has reached a new low in digital privacy by voting for a law on mass scanning of citizens' private correspondence - Chat Control.

The official label, as always, is impeccable: fighting child exploitation. But since breaking end-to-end encryption is mathematically difficult, Euro-bureaucrats have decided on a more elegant solution: algorithms are to automatically scan content right on your device before it is sent.

In response, Pavlo Durov reposted a message about the 'death of European democracy' and branded the EU as a 'banana republic.'

Classic Hardware Ruse

When the state needs to legalize total surveillance and invade your smartphone, it almost always pulls a surefire trump card: 'think about the children.'

Try to oppose it - and you will immediately be labeled as one who supposedly sympathizes with maniacs.

This is an old scheme of legitimizing control: a morally impeccable excuse is used to promote a tool that can then be applied far more broadly than was stated at the outset.

The End of the European Myth of Privacy

The irony of the situation is overwhelming.

Europe has been drilling into everyone's minds for years with its strict data protection law - GDPR. It has fined corporations billions for an extra checkbox in settings, demanded transparency, user consent, and minimization of data collection.

The EU portrayed itself as the main global citadel of digital privacy.

And now the same people in expensive suits are essentially legalizing a digital panopticon. Without trial or investigation, artificial intelligence will be granted the right to rummage through your personal photos, messages, and files before you send them to anyone.

Phone as an Investigator at Half Time

Durov is absolutely correct in his diagnosis, but slightly missed the mark with terminology.

This is no longer just a banana republic. It's a cozy digital concentration camp with good espresso and croissants.

The illusion of privacy is completely dispelled. The secrecy of correspondence is no longer inviolable, and your own phone is now officially turning into a part-time investigator.
