How to Properly Venerate Icons: Guidance from the Orthodox Church of Ukraine

Правила шанування святих образів: поради від православних установ України.

The Spiritual Meaning Behind Icon Veneration

According to Главком: The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has issued clarifications on both the spiritual and practical aspects of honoring icons, emphasizing that an icon is not a magical object but rather a window into the spiritual realm. Clergy have prepared explanations underscoring that reverence is directed not at the material itself, but at the person depicted on the icon. Miracles are performed by God, not by the icon, and the ultimate purpose of veneration is to inspire individuals to become living icons of God.

Rules for Approaching and Kissing Icons

Kissing a sacred image is an ancient expression of pious greeting and love. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine advises that one should approach icons calmly, without pushing others, while silently offering a prayer. The accepted practice is as follows:

  • Make the sign of the cross twice with a bow from the waist;
  • Then kiss the icon as a sign of respect and love for the person depicted;
  • After kissing, make the sign of the cross a third time, bow (or kiss), and step away.

Only one kiss is required, even if the icon shows multiple saints. This kiss should be performed with reverence. Avoid kissing sacred images directly on the face; instead, kiss the hand, foot, or edge of the garment of the holy figure depicted. It is also important not to kiss non-saintly figures or animals that may appear in the image, such as the serpent being slain by Saint George. For obvious hygiene reasons, it is discouraged to kiss icons with lipstick on, or to conspicuously wipe the icon before kissing it.

If one has reservations, bowing or prostrating before sacred objects such as the cross, icons, or holy relics is a sufficient act of veneration without kissing.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has called on the faithful to remember the importance of a living faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, to pray with both heart and mind, and to love and honor not only the saints but also their neighbors.

This guidance from the Orthodox Church of Ukraine arrives at a critical time, as the country faces modern challenges, particularly amid military conflict and societal tension. By emphasizing the spiritual meaning of icon veneration, the Church offers not only practical instructions for believers but also a call for unity and peace during difficult times. The challenges confronting Ukrainian society today make it essential to focus on inner calm and a living faith, which can serve as a foundation for overcoming hardship.
