Ukrainian Pensioners Risk Overpayments: Key Deadlines for Updating Personal Information
Why Pensioners Must Update Their Personal Information
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Pension Fund of Ukraine (PFU) has issued a warning to retirees: failing to promptly update your personal details can lead to benefit overpayments, which you will be legally required to repay to the state. Delays in reporting changes could result in the loss of some payments or a significant debt to the government. The PFU's press service stresses the critical importance of timely notification regarding any change in personal status.
Common Causes of Overpayments and Reporting Requirements
The primary cause of unlawful overpayments is withholding information from state authorities, such as taking up formal employment or starting a business. Retirees receiving a service pension who return to work in their field must also inform the PFU. Furthermore, payments may be reduced if a pensioner changes residence by moving away from mountainous regions or areas contaminated by radiation. Losing veteran-of-war status is another change that must be reported.
- Starting formal employment or entrepreneurial activity
- Change of residence (moving from mountainous or radiation-contaminated areas)
- Loss of veteran-of-war status
- Cessation of studies by a deceased breadwinner's child or a switch to part-time studies
Additionally, the right to a child supplement is revoked if the deceased breadwinner's child stops studying or switches to a part-time program. Overpayments can also be triggered by an employer providing false data on salary or length of service, or by simultaneously receiving a dependent's supplement and a survivor's pension. Under the Law 'On Mandatory State Pension Insurance', all overpaid sums must be returned.

The state recovers these debts through three channels: voluntary repayment, withholding funds based on PFU decisions, or through court proceedings. Navigating pension rules is crucial in Ukraine, where the state pension system is a primary source of income for millions of elderly citizens.
Updating personal data is a vital step in ensuring the stability of pension payments. Pensioners who comply with this requirement in a timely manner can avoid the financial hardship associated with repaying overpaid benefits. In the context of Ukraine's broader economic situation, adhering to these rules is especially important for securing the material support of the elderly.
