Ukrainian Air Defense System in Action

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Pentagon has begun operating the Ukrainian-made Sky Map counter-drone system at the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Ukrainian military personnel have arrived at the base to train American operators on the system. Developed by the Ukrainian company Sky Fortress, Sky Map is a command-and-control platform that integrates data from radars and sensors. In Ukraine, Sky Fortress has already deployed over 10,000 acoustic sensors for drone detection.

This deployment highlights the deepening defense technology partnership between the U.S. and Ukraine, particularly in response to evolving aerial threats. The Prince Sultan Air Base is located roughly 640 kilometers from Iran, making it a critical strategic location. On March 27, an Iranian strike destroyed an E-3 AWACS reconnaissance aircraft at the base and damaged several KC-135 tankers. The base also utilizes Merops interceptors, which were developed by the U.S. company Project Eagle with support from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Layered Counter-Drone Defenses

To detect aerial threats, the base employs the Forward Area Air Defense (FAAD) platform from Northrop Grumman, a system the U.S. Army first deployed in the 1990s. For close-range drone defense, RTX's Coyote interceptors are used. The Pentagon's Joint Interagency Task Force 401 has allocated $350 million to bolster base defenses as part of Operation Epic Fury.

Meanwhile, in the broader context of countering drone threats, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated:

“We don’t need their help in countering drones”

Additionally, expert Adam Scher noted:

“There is no ‘silver bullet’ that will stop every drone threat”

These statements underscore the complexity of the challenge and the necessity for a comprehensive, multi-layered defense strategy. The integration of the Sky Map system at Prince Sultan demonstrates the U.S. military's pragmatic approach to adopting effective technology from international partners. As regional tensions with Iran persist, leveraging such advanced systems is crucial for enhancing U.S. defensive capabilities against increasingly sophisticated drone attacks.

The integration of the Ukrainian Sky Map system at the Saudi Arabian airbase is part of a broader strategy to enhance aerial defenses in the region.
