South Africa Repatriates Citizens Recruited to Fight in Ukraine
South African Nationals Return Home
According to Главком: South Africa has successfully repatriated several of its citizens who, according to their families, were deceived into fighting for Russia in the war against Ukraine. The recruitment effort has been linked to Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma. Four men returned home last week, with 11 more citizens expected to arrive shortly. One of the returnees is currently receiving hospital treatment, while another is preparing for his journey back. This incident highlights the global reach of foreign military recruitment efforts during the Ukraine conflict.
Deceptive Recruitment and Legal Repercussions
Families report that the men were initially offered training for security guard jobs, only to be later coerced into signing military service contracts. Under South African law, which has been in effect since 1998, participating in or aiding foreign armed forces is a criminal offense. South African citizens allegedly involved in organizing this recruitment scheme remain under investigation.
On February 10th, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa held a phone call with the Russian President, during which he requested assistance in repatriating the citizens. Ramaphosa thanked the Kremlin leader for his positive response and cooperation in facilitating their return.
This situation underscores the complex diplomatic relationship between South Africa and Russia, particularly within the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The return of these deceived citizens could serve as a significant step in improving the image of the Ramaphosa government as it works to protect its nationals abroad. Concurrently, the investigation into the recruitment network may raise further questions about the potential involvement of high-profile figures and the possible domestic political consequences.
