Poland blocks sick leave payments for Ukrainians: why they are being canceled
Millions of Ukrainians in Poland risk losing sick leave payments (zasiłek chorobowy) due to a simple trip to visit family or an "innocent" walk. ZUS cancels payments if you do not stay at home for the entire period. This was reported by "The First Business".
Who is affected by the refusal of sick leave payments in Poland
Even with a doctor's certificate, checks can lead to the return of already received payments, and this applies to 1.5 million migrant workers who rely on social protection while working officially.
What is the amount of sick leave payments from salary in Poland
Legally employed Ukrainians in Poland receive 80% of their salary when on sick leave from the first day, but ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) strictly controls: inspectors visit homes or track activity on social media.
If you do not reside at the address listed in the letter or do something "harmful" for recovery – payments are delayed. Additionally, there will be a demand to reimburse everything.
In 2025, checks intensified: according to ZUS, 15% of cases represent abuse, and Ukrainians top the list due to frequent trips. For example: you went to Ukraine for 3 days without a doctor's permission – and 5000 zlotys (over 50 thousand UAH) back to the fund. An employer can also dismiss for a "fake" sick leave.
Reasons for refusal of sick leave payments in Poland
Here are typical violations that lead to cancellation:
-
Remote work or freelance while ill;
-
Participation in concerts, shopping, or other public events;
-
Traveling abroad, including to Ukraine, without approval;
-
Simply walking outside the home without medical justification.
Experts emphasize:
"In Poland, sick leave is not personal time but a period that should be devoted to restoring health".
In 2025, ZUS introduced digital tracking for foreigners – geolocation from the insurance app, so hiding is pointless.
Earlier, we reported that Poland is introducing monthly job checks for Ukrainians.
