Poland Closes Airspace Near Border Following Major Russian Assault on Ukraine
Polish Airspace Closure
According to Главком: Poland has temporarily closed the airspace around the Lublin and Rzeszów airports due to military activity. This decision was made in response to a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight on February 7th, which impacted multiple regions. The restrictions are linked to the necessity of ensuring state security. This move highlights how the conflict in Ukraine directly affects the security of neighboring NATO member states.
The airspace closure affected NATO aircraft conducting missions in the region. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported scrambling combat aircraft in response to the threat. As of the time of publication, Polish and allied aircraft have concluded operations related to the Russian attack on Ukraine. Consequently, Poland's ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have returned to their standard operational mode.
Large-Scale Russian Attack
Overnight on February 7th, Russia launched a massive assault using attack drones and missiles. In the Kyiv region on the morning of February 7th, firefighters were still working to extinguish a blaze at a warehouse facility following a drone strike. Russian drones also struck a critical infrastructure object in Volyn, resulting in damage. The Ivano-Frankivsk region was hit by cruise missiles and drones, with a series of secondary explosions recorded in Burshtyn. Explosions were also heard in Vinnytsia, where a high-speed target was heading.
Furthermore, on February 7th, the enemy directed drones at the Dnipropetrovsk region, causing damage in the city of Dnipro on the premises of a communal enterprise, as well as to buildings, trolleybuses, and automobiles. The Khmelnytskyi region also suffered from a missile and drone attack, which left one man injured.
This situation indicates an escalation of military action in the region, which could impact the security of neighboring countries.
Poland's airspace closure reflects the severity of the threats Ukraine faces due to Russian aggression. Given NATO's increased activity in the region, this event also underscores the critical importance of continued international support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict.
