Diabetes in Ukraine: over 1.3 million patients and new treatment rules
On World Diabetes Day, over 1.3 million people in Ukraine live with this chronic disease. Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot properly use or produce insulin - the hormone that controls blood glucose levels.
Since the beginning of 2025, nearly 191 thousand Ukrainians have received this diagnosis. Last year, this figure was 260 thousand 242 patients. The most common is type 2 diabetes, which affects over 1.26 million Ukrainians. Type 1 diabetes has been diagnosed in more than 190 thousand individuals.
Over the past two years, the National Health Service of Ukraine has reimbursed pharmacies more than 2.6 billion hryvnias for insulins, which is five times more than in 2021. The number of test strips dispensed to patients with type 1 diabetes has increased almost 20 times.
Early Detection and Prevention
About half of people with diabetes do not even know they have the condition. To detect the disease in its early stages, starting in 2026, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine will launch a National Health Screening 40+, which will help identify cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in people aged 40 and older.
