Temporary Restrictions Imposed on Zadorozhne Lake Access

According to Главком: Authorities in the Lviv region have placed a temporary ban on visiting and swimming in Zadorozhne Lake, also referred to as Baikal, due to an outbreak of acute intestinal infection. The restriction, enacted upon the recommendation of Lviv Oblast Chief Sanitary Doctor Nataliia Ivanchenko, will remain in effect until July 7, 2026. As of now, the number of confirmed cases has risen to 29, with 27 of them being children.

The outbreak has been identified among individuals who spent time at Zadorozhne Lake. Hospitalized patients are presenting symptoms such as:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • digestive disturbances
  • elevated body temperature

Specialists from the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine are conducting an epidemiological investigation to determine the source of the outbreak.

Children Account for Majority of Hospitalizations

Earlier this month, twenty children aged 2 to 14 were hospitalized in the Lviv region. In total, 28 patients are currently receiving inpatient care, including two adults and 27 minors under 18. Local authorities in the Mykolaiv community are urging residents to take this warning seriously, avoid water-based recreation during the restricted period, and prioritize the safety of themselves and their children.

Notably, this is not the first intestinal infection outbreak in the area. In February 2026, a similar incident occurred in Lviv after dining at an entertainment venue, resulting in over 10 children being hospitalized. Information about the acute intestinal infection outbreak at Zadorozhne Lake was made public through a notification from the Mykolaiv City Territorial Community.

The intestinal infection outbreak at Zadorozhne Lake has raised serious concern among local authorities and medical institutions, as the majority of those affected are children. The swimming and visitation ban, lasting until July 7, 2026, aims to prevent further cases and safeguard public health. The ongoing epidemiological investigation may also highlight the need for stricter sanitation oversight at recreational sites.

As authorities investigate the recent outbreak at Zadorozhne Lake, it's important to note that water safety remains a critical concern across the region. A recent report highlighted that nearly 15% of water samples from various Ukrainian beaches were found to be unsafe, raising alarms about public health. Understanding the broader context of these findings could provide valuable insights into the ongoing situation.
